What does it mean that Jesus is "the beginning of the creation of God"?

It refers to Christ as the first-born of those who would be resurrected unto eternal life. Christians are referred to as a "new creation". And when our bodies are finally resurrected in their final glorified form, then we shall be a completed new creation of God. So Christ is the first, or the beginning, of this type of new creation.
