Generally you should take it all literally until it's been categorically proven that it's wrong, then you smile condescendingly at people and say "it's metaphorical, if you were a Christian you would know that. You have to be a Christian to understand the Bible." If you can do it while looking down your nose at the other person that definitely helps too.
